Monasterevan derived it's name from the monastery founded here by St.
Abhan in the 7th century, when he placed monks here from south Munster.
The Monastery was later abandoned but it was re-founded towards the end
of the 12th century by Dermot O' Dempsey, King of Offaly. This
is a town of many bridges the oldest being the Ballagh or pass bridge.
which crosses the Barrow. Moore Abbey is a neo-gothic mansion situated
near the banks of the barrow. This spacious 17th century house is
built on the site of the medieval abbey and was leased to the famous
tenor, Count John McCormack, in the 1920s.
